Trip to Avalon

I just got back from California a few days ago. What a great trip. Along with family vacation, I got to paint a few days and visit many a gallery. Special thanks to Roberta Haltom at The Redfern Gallery for her insight and guidance.
The painting I am posting is tittled "Above Avalon" and was done from my visit to Catalina Island. I can honestly say that the color and light on this island is among the best spots I have ever had the opportunity to paint. I can not wait to return for an extended trip.

Chase Farm

With a recent trip to Vermont, it is ever more apparent to me that what is left of rural America is slowly going by the wayside. I know very well that many of the areas I paint have been painted before and I guess I always hoped they would be painted long after were all gone. The barn in this picture is slowly being taken down. It is a sad state of degradation of what was once and still could be a great farm. Curtin and Hibbard amongst others painted here. I am simply glad to have the chance to stand were they once did and paint the scene before its changed forever.

"Friendship Lupine" 8x10 oil

Summer is Here
Summer is Here
One of my favorite times of the year is when the lupine are in bloom in Maine. It is sort of their unofficial sign that summer is truly here to stay for a while. The house, located in Friendship, ME provided the perfect backdrop for the flowers. My main goal was to make sure that the purple in the field was balanced by purples in the sky. I am happy with the result and look forward to painting a larger version.

"Big Papi" 8x8" oil

Now that football season is over, it is time to look forward to spring training. It has been increasable to watch what David Ortiz has done the last few seasons. This painting is a small 8x8" oil catching the slugger in action. I changed a few things from the photo to make it my own. I really wanted to capture the anticipation in the crowd watching the ball in air along with Ortiz in action. I was happy with the results. I hope to do a larger painting before the smaller one sells. This painting is available in the "Daily Painting" section of my works portfolio.

Mt. Mansfield" 6x8" Oil

Late in 2006 I started to paint small daily works. These are paintings that vary in size from 4x6" to 8x10" that I paint relativly quickly as a warm up. They are offered at a more reasonable price per square inch that other works and are available through a couple of galleries and this website in the works section.

Today's painting, which has already sold, is Mt. Mansfield in January with a dead Maple tree on the left side of the picture. Breaks in the snow and the tree line in back provide a few areas of warmth in this otherwise cool picture.

Also in the picture is the paint box that I use for most daily's. It holds a 6x8" or 8x10" and lately, it never leaves my side. I put it in a satchel and take it everywhere. This truly makes daily painting a breeze. Utrecht Art Supplies sells this thumb box for about $70.
